E-Beam & High-Security Holograms in India
By Rajneesh Sharma, Owner, Kiran Holographics
Not every hologram offers the same level of security. A simple rainbow sticker discourages casual copying, but government documents, high-value brands and pharmaceuticals often need more. E-beam holograms and other high-security holograms use advanced origination methods to create features that are extremely difficult to reproduce. This article explains how they differ and when they are worth it.
How origination affects security
Every hologram starts as a master, created in an origination lab. The method used to create that master decides how complex, sharp and hard to copy the final hologram is. Common methods include 2D/3D optical origination, dot matrix, and e-beam lithography. Each step up adds finer detail and more features that need special equipment to reproduce.
Dot matrix holograms
A dot matrix system writes the design as millions of tiny diffraction dots, each with its own angle. It allows bright, dynamic effects such as movement, colour switches and kinetic images. Dot matrix is widely used for brand protection labels because it balances security and cost.
E-beam holograms
E-beam lithography uses a focused electron beam to write the design at a much finer scale. This allows very sharp images, smooth animations, nano-text and hidden features that cannot be achieved with optical methods. Because the equipment is specialised and expensive, e-beam holograms are among the hardest to copy and are used for passports, currency-grade documents and high-value products.
Features of a high-security hologram
- Micro and nano text visible only under magnification.
- Hidden images revealed with a laser or at a specific angle.
- Kinetic and switch effects where the image moves or changes colour as it tilts.
- Serial numbers, QR codes and UV inks added during finishing.
- Tamper-evident materials so the hologram cannot be moved to another product.
Who needs high-security holograms
Government departments, universities, excise and tax stamps, pharma companies and brands that face organised counterfeiting benefit most. For everyday brand protection, a well-designed dot matrix hologram is often enough. The right choice depends on how valuable the product is and how skilled the counterfeiters are.
Our Jaipur origination lab creates 2D/3D, dot matrix and e-beam designs, and we supply masters to manufacturers abroad as well as finished security holograms.
FAQ
Is an e-beam hologram more expensive?
Yes, origination costs more, but per-label cost falls with volume. It is best for products where security matters most.
Can I combine e-beam and dot matrix in one design?
Yes. Many high-security designs combine methods to add more layers of protection.
Do you keep high-security designs confidential?
Yes. Custom masters are used only for the client's orders.
