Hologram Labels for Liquor Bottles: Stop Fakes and Refills
By Rajneesh Sharma, Owner, Kiran Holographics
Liquor is one of the most copied products in the market. High prices and strong brand names make it a target. Fake liquor costs brands sales, damages their reputation, and can be dangerous for the people who drink it. One of the most common ways brands fight back is with a hologram label on the bottle.
This guide explains the problems liquor brands face, how holograms help, and how to choose the right hologram for your bottles.
The two big problems: fakes and refills
Fake bottles copy the look of your brand: the bottle, the label and the cap. A printed label is easy to copy. A well-made hologram is not, because its pattern comes from an origination lab, not a printing press.
Refilled bottles are a different problem. Here, a genuine bottle is collected, refilled with cheap or unsafe liquor, and sold again. The bottle and label are real, so only a seal that breaks on opening can show the problem. This is why tamper-evident holograms matter so much for liquor.
Where holograms go on a liquor bottle
- Cap seal: a hologram strip or label placed across the cap and neck, so it breaks when the bottle is opened. The most important place for stopping refills.
- Neck label: a visible hologram that customers see first.
- Main label: a hologram patch or hot stamping foil on the front label for brand impact.
- Carton or gift box: hologram foil or labels on premium packaging.
Tamper-evident hologram seals
A tamper-evident seal is designed so it cannot be removed and put back. If someone tries to peel it off, it breaks apart, tears or leaves a pattern behind. Placed across the cap, it gives a clear signal: if the seal is broken, the bottle has been opened. This makes refilling much harder to hide.
Choosing the right security level
Most liquor brands use more than one level of security:
- Level 1, overt: visible effects like colour shift, depth and movement, so customers and shopkeepers can check by eye.
- Level 2, covert: hidden features such as micro text, checked with a simple tool by your field team or distributors.
- Level 3, forensic: lab-verified features for investigations and legal action.
For liquor, a mix of overt features for buyers and covert features for your own checks works well. Learn more about the options in our guide on types of holograms.
Special needs of liquor bottles
Liquor bottles face conditions most packs do not. A good hologram label for liquor should handle:
- Glass surfaces, including curved necks and caps
- Cold and moisture from chillers, ice buckets and condensation
- Handling during transport, stacking and display
Tell your hologram supplier about your bottle shape and storage conditions, so they can choose the right adhesive and label material.
Custom hologram or stock design?
A stock hologram can be bought by anyone, including counterfeiters. A custom hologram made from your own master, with your logo and hidden features, is much harder to copy. For liquor, a custom design is almost always worth it.
Applying labels at speed
Liquor plants bottle in high volumes. Applying hologram seals by hand slows the line and leads to uneven placement. A hologram label applicator places each seal in the right spot, at speed.
