Hologram Master Origination System: Types, Lab Setup and How to Choose

By Rajneesh Sharma, Owner, Kiran Holographics

A hologram master origination system is the set of equipment that turns a design into the first holographic master, the plate from which every shim, sticker, label and film is later copied. If you run an embossing line, or plan a new hologram plant, the origination step decides how secure and how sharp your holograms can be. This guide explains the main kinds of origination systems, what a lab needs around them, and when it makes sense to build your own lab instead of buying masters.

Where origination fits in hologram production

Every hologram passes through the same chain:

  1. Origination: the design is recorded as a microscopic light-bending pattern on a glass plate coated with photoresist.
  2. Silvering: the developed plate is given a thin conductive layer.
  3. Electroforming: the plate is copied into a nickel master, and then into production shims. See hologram electroforming and nickel shims.
  4. Embossing: the shim presses the pattern into film on a narrow web or wide web machine.
  5. Finishing: metallizing or coating, then slitting, die cutting and application.

Steps 2 to 5 copy the pattern. Only step 1 creates it, which is why the origination system is the heart of hologram security.

The main types of origination system

2D/3D optical origination

An optical table with a laser records layered images, so parts of the design seem to float above or below the surface. It is used for classic brand holograms and is often combined with other techniques in one master.

Dot matrix origination

A dot matrix system writes the image dot by dot, each dot a tiny grating with its own angle. A computer controls a precise motion stage, so the result has sharp, bright colour changes when tilted. Dot matrix is the most common system for security labels because designs are fast to change and the effects are hard to copy by hand.

E-beam lithography

An electron beam writes structures far finer than a laser can, for micro text, nano text and complex kinetic effects. E-beam masters are used for the highest security levels, such as government documents and tax stamps. See e-beam and high-security holograms.

Advanced and lens effects

Masters with Fresnel lens, metal-look and multi-angle effects (for example Kinemax-type masters) give strong visual impact across many viewing angles. They are usually combined with dot matrix or 2D/3D in one design.

Recombination and positioning systems

An origination system records a small image. Production needs a larger plate with many copies of that image, placed exactly. This is the job of two related systems:

If your plant makes registered labels or seamless film, ask any supplier how recombination and positioning are handled, not only how the original is written.

What a master origination lab needs

The system alone is not a lab. Around it you need:

Buy masters or build your own lab?

Buying masters suits a plant that is starting out, or one with a small number of new designs each month. You send the artwork and machine details, and receive a nickel master or operation shim ready for your machine. Our master origination lab in Jaipur supplies masters for narrow web and wide web machines in India and abroad.

An in-house lab suits a plant with a steady flow of new designs, security customers who want designs kept inside the company, or a long distance from any master supplier. It needs investment, space and trained staff, so it is usually planned together with the rest of the plant.

Many plants do both: they order masters first, and add their own lab once production is steady.

Questions to ask an origination system supplier

  1. Which techniques can the system record: 2D/3D, dot matrix, e-beam, lens effects?
  2. How are recombination and positioning done, and what accuracy is confirmed in writing?
  3. Are silvering and electroforming tanks included, or bought separately?
  4. What installation and operator training is included, and where?
  5. Will the masters run on your narrow web or wide web embossing machine?
  6. What support is available after installation, and who supplies spares?

FAQ

What is a hologram master origination system?

It is the equipment that records a design as the first holographic master on a coated glass plate. All shims and holograms are later copied from that master.

What is the difference between origination and recombination?

Origination creates the original image. Recombination copies that image many times onto a larger plate in exact positions, so production shims can emboss many labels at once.

Can you set up a master origination lab at our plant?

Yes. Our Complete hologram plant package includes a master origination lab setup and electroforming tanks for nickel shims, with installation and operator training. The exact equipment list comes in a project report for your plan.

Can we buy masters until our own lab is ready?

Yes. Send your design and machine type, and we supply nickel masters or operation shims from Jaipur. See the hologram master plate guide for what to send.
